It all becomes a lot clearer when you see that Tolkien wasn't writing 'fantasy'. What he was doing was making up, for his own and his readers' enjoyment, a synthetic mythology. Mythology does not have relatable protagonists, or many of the other things that turn up in standard fiction. If I try to explain it here, I'll take too much space. I'll write something.
