In the long term, you're probably right, but in thre short to medium term, the viable practical answer is to take away the guns. Why? Because two other defining factors of human nature are cowardice and laziness!

A rifle, or even a handgun, permits the holder to damage or kill people from a distance, and without a great degree of exertion. To do the same amount of damage with a bladed weapin or blunt instrument requires not only physical effort, but proximity. Sufficient proximity to allow for retaliation. Also, if you're going after people with that kind of weapon, they are more likely to run than hide, so you have to chase them.

So if you wake up one morning really pissed off, it's easy to grab a gun and go kill people. But if you have to use a hammer or a knife, chase folk down and risk getting a hiding yourself, you think twice, and most of the time you don't do it!
