In fairness, I'm no film expert, I did a couple of Film Studies modules for my degree, that's all. But I do know that, however faithful the adaptation, book and film remain two entirely distinct texts, to be consumed in different ways. To me, the problem of the purists lies in the fact that they attempt to consume these two texts in the same way, and that can't be done.
