IMO, the real start of the Science vs Religion 'feud' was the publication of Darwins theories. The shape and size of the cosmos are things which can be squared with Creation. But casting doubt on the direct divine creation of mankind was something much more fundamental, it caused consternation across many fields, not least theology and philosophy.
