If you find a publication that fits with what you want to write about, then it's a good idea because you will find the readers you're trying to reach. So for a specialist writer, a specialist publication is ideal.
I specialise in eclecticism and grumpiness, so I have my own publication to be grumpy in and contribute to an eclectic one.
That said, I'm a hobbyist, not a professional, so reads/earnings are not a matter of urgency for me. I like it when people read my stuff, but if they have better things to do, fair enough.
