If they were to recognise that the 'divine' element of Jesus is pagan in origin, it might be easier.

The Dying and Resurrected Christ is a motif borrowed from Mediterranean vegetation Hero cults and built into Christianity by the Hellenised Jew Saul/Paul, the real author of the cult. The Communion and Last Supper, the symbolic consumption of the 'dead' God harks back to the myths of Zagreus/Dionysos and Pelops. In the original Mystery Cult, it is likely that full Initiates were expected to refuse the bread and wine, as the Olympian Gods did with Pelops, to indicate they understood the Mystery, while those who accepted them did so to signify that they were as yet only postulants.

Strip away these pagan elements and you have a mortal man, preaching a religion of tolerance and Universal love and tolerance as a path to enlightenment and union with God, as well as a rejection of restrictive and occasionally harmful adherence to relgious rituals and man-made theology. A far more accepting path.
