I wasn't clear, was I? I've done suffering in my time, and I still have pain much of the time. But between CBT and the study of Stoicism I realised, that pain and suffering are not the same.

Pain is in the body, as inevitable as life and a thing over which we have little or no control.

Suffering is a mental state, in the mind, and thus subject to our control.

As soon as this is grasped and understood, then the mind can remain clear and serene whatever the body suffers.

Thus if I am not in a physical body, I can't be hurt. If I am, I can be hurt, but it will not affect my mind unless I choose to let it.

I would certainly acknowledge a holy God, though 'submit' is a step too far - my mind will always be free. But then a truly holy God wouldn't object to that. Unfortunately I don't know of any holy Gods. All the ones I ever heard of have been thin-skinned, tyrannical egomaniacs, and I won't worship that kind of God, let Him do what He will with me - my mind is my own.
