I think both techniques have their uses and places. Method acting wouldn't work for Shakespeare, where so much emphasis is placed on the language.
The problems faced by Method actors playing roles such as The Joker demonstrate that, when playng characters who are deliberately unrealistic, the technique can in fact be dangerous.
Method was designed for use in 'modern' theatre, where characters are meant to be realistic and where Classical styles would take away from this.
Thus romance, crime drama, war and western, soap opera and even espionage (in the Le Carre mode), benefit from Method acting.
However, in the SF, fantasy, horror and superhero genres, it's often better to stick to Classical because the characters are, by their nature, frequently unrealistic.
Comedy, it must be said, requires its own unique skillset to be done properly.
