I tend to refer, in my own sadly-deficent mind, to Jesus as a 'mythologised composite' which is to say a composite of several actual people, known of anecdotally to the early Gospel writers. The stories were taken, embroidered upon and attributed to the emblematic central figure of a new mystery cult of Jews, for Jews. Specifically, I imagine, Hellenised Jews who admired the Greek way of doing things
Paul (who may also be several people) later took the exoteric aspects of the cult (of which he may have been an initiate), top-loaded it with Stoic and Cynic thought regarding the conduct of the individual, and sold it to the Gentiles as a new religion. They called it Christianity, I call it PPF - Pauls' Pension Fund. Whether he made that much money off it I don't know, but a lot of other people have since and still are!
BTW, not to nitpick, but the past tense of 'slay' is 'slew', not 'slayed'.
