I wonder if you;lve ever come across a couple of books by William Kotzwinkle? Dr Rat is a little predictable in its' 'message', but the balance between horror, lyricism and humour is perfect. Herr Nightingale and the Satin Woman is something else altogether, and has to be read to be grasped.
