I make no assumptions. All I say is that Millies' behaviour and personality changed as her parents' relationship broke up. Whether this was because of underlying autism, PTSD or both, I can't and won't say definitively because I don't really know. What I do know is that the autism diagnosis has got her the support she needs, whereas a 'simple' family break-up would not have done.

I myself, were I Millies' age, would undoubtedly be diagnosed as dyspraxic. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, my lack of arithmetical skills and poor coordination were put down to stupidity, laziness, clumsiness and being left-handed! I contrived to manage.

I treat Millie as I would have wished adults to treat me when I was young. I speak to her quietly and reasonably, I listen to her and do not pressure her with falsely- hearty 'encouragement' and false promises of "You'll grow out of it!". Also I don't maul her - if she wants a hug, she lets me know in her own way. She trusts me, knows I'm always there for her, and that's what matters.
