I keep hearing about 'getting back to normal' in regard to Covid, yet the scientists say it's going to be with us for good now, so what is normal?

WFH has proved not to be the mass-skiving disaster some predicted, but nonetheless authoritarian employers, office bullies and city-centre coffee-shops want people back in the office asap. Not for good and practical purposes, just their own satisfaction.

The so-called hospitality industry wants to get back to its traditional role of inciting or at least enabling drink-driving, street brawls and domestic abuse.

As for individuals, some of them can't wait to blow their foul breath on each other, get in each others' faces and manhandle people! The very next non-family member who tries to hug me will get thumped!

OK, ranting aside, these events should have taught us that there are changes we can make that not only keep us safe, but make life more pleasant. Remote working need not be the default setting, but should always be an equal option where possible. The simple consideration of giving each other space is in itself a stress-reducer for many. Fewer people in pubs and clubs means, quite simply, fewer drunks on the streets. Restrictions on foreign travel help the environment and do good things for domestic tourism (the UK may be small, but it is still one of the most beautiful and interesting countries around).

How about we lose the bad things about the pandemic, but keep some of the good things that came out of it?
