I find a simple "Oh, you've seen them, have you?" can throw a spanner in the works quite nicely. If you get a resounding Yes then you can point out that these were specific individuals. If they say no but X told me, you go the "Oh, riiight!" route. If they say everyone knows you say "Well I don't!". If they fkounder, give them a pitying look and walk away.
