I do think you're being a little too idealistic about animism. As I've said elsewhere, it's entirely possible that the whole idea of the 'spirits' and the ability of some people to communicate effectively with them came from some old chap who didn't want to be kicked out of the cave (or killed and eaten) when he got too old to work! Thus the Primal Commandment becomes "Thouse shalt look after the Old Folk".
