I do see what you're saying. But I also contend that if the land or territorial claims were not an issue, then the religious conflict would be a lower-key one. based mostly on lawsuits and campaigns for this and that bit of legislation or regulation. But if you give one lot of homeless people a home by letting them evict the previous occupants, you make matters worse.

People portray the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland as being about Protestants and Catholics. It wasn't, it was about land in Ulster being given to Scots and English 'settlers', thereby reducing the native Irish to poverty. It was about the British Parliament going back on its' promises and partitioning Ireland after a majority had voted for an independent, united Ireland. An Irish government would have attempted to redress the balance in Ulster in favour of native Irish, while the descendants of the settlers wanted to hang on to their privileges.

It's easy to persuade the dim-witted to side with you if you purport to be defending their religion. But only the dim-witted or uneducated are so committed to religion. The ones masterminding this conflict are aiming for wealth, land and power, and are clever people who have not a scrap of religion to their names. If religion disappears, they will simply find other ways to manipulate the majority, the conflict would continue.
