I dealt with the 'everyday' understanding of God because that is what we have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Whatever way they might try to dress it up, most Christians (and indeed Muslims) still basically believe in the irascible elderly gentleman on the golden throne in the sky. The educated among them may have other concepts, but it all still boils down to what my grandfather used to call 'the Universal Gaffer'.

My own understanding of God is that we wouldn't understand them, or they us, anyway. The concept of a being of such transcendent nature having even the remotest awareness of or interest in us as individuals or a species strikes me as beyond ludicrous and another aspect of human arrogance. It would be interesting to find out if they actually exist, but in the long run, it wouldn't change much for us (or anything at all for them), at least for all practical purposes.
