How is it that religious conflicts not only bring out the worst in people, but manage to search out and find the worst people?

The Spanish Inquisition found Torquemada (unexpectedly, I presume). Fundamentalist Islam found bin Laden, and so on. There were even religious aspects to the atrocities of Hitler and Himmler.
