Having studied media for my degree, I certainly concur that editorial approach is fundamental in all media in defining the view presented and endorsed. Sometimes this is deliberate and detailed, sometimes simply cultural and almost unconscious.

In fairness to the BBC, Sir John Reiths' original vision involved a bare reporting of the facts, without comment or question. This has been tweaked over time, but comment and question are still based around what are deemed 'universal values' such as human rights, democracy and the notion (at least) of equality. The BBCs' biggest problem is its 'middle-class voice', which despite all efforts by various Controllers and and Directors-General, remains unchanged.

I take leave to doubt that any format will ever find the 'truth'. As Pilate asked, "What is truth?". But a committment by editors and other gatekeepers to presenting, without prejudice, as wide a range of rational views and interesting topics as possible, and ot encouraging civil discussion and argument, is a good place to start. Discussion promotes understanding, and from understanding come new viewpoints and ideas.
