Good, bad, indifferent, all based on criteria laid down by a closed circle of largely self-appointed arbiters.
Some people queue up and hand over money to doze through 'important' films. They buy the latest Man Booker Prize winner, place a book mark at random among the pages and leave it lying around where visitors can see it. They series-link the latest 'critically-acclamed' drama or documentary and doze through that. They pick up just enough about all this stuff to contribute to a dinner-party conversation. They remain unenlightened and unentertained. They watch Eastenders and Love Island on the QT.
I've studied Media, Film and English Lit. I've picked up some awareness of architecture and art from TV programmes. Now I apply only one criterion: "Will I enjoy it?". Simple yes or no. Will you enjoy it? I don't know, that's up to you.
