Given the manners and mores of the time, I think it's safe to say that Carrouges deeply loved his wife, and that he believed her. Had he had any doubts, he would have been well within his rights to put her aside and confine her to a convent for the rest of her life, whilst keeping the property and wealth of her dowry for himself.

To put himself in harms' way, against a man he knew to be a formidable fighter, to save his wifes' honour when, by the rules of the time, it would have been easier and safer to repudiate her as an adulteress says a good deal about their relationship. It also implies that Le Gris was guilty of something.
