Freud was, of course, a charlatan, as was Jung. The causes of psychological damage are as many and as varied as the people suffering it.
Women have suffered much worse than men in the search for uniformity and consistency which has characterised so much of both psychological and sociological research. The roles of women have always been so strictly delineated that it was far too easy to diagnose behaviours as erratic or unstable.
Also the male desire to be able to say that "A is always and only the result of B", thus bringing order to the world, was and in many case remains a crippling barrier to research.
