This will continue until it is recognised that the fundamental requirement of democracy is a proper liberal education for all citizens. By that I mean one that includes the 'liberal arts' (those essential to free people) - subjects which by their nature instil both critical thnking and the importance of active, responsible citizenship.

The battle-cry of the Modern Parent -"You can be whatever you want to be!" not only sets kids up for massive disappointment, but also reiterates the modern attitude that Rights outweigh Duties. Few peole nowadays remember that to enjoy the one, you need to fulfil the other. That is something a liberal education also instils.
