Despite the fact that spectacles had existed for centuries, Samuel Pepys was unable to obtain a pair and had to give up writing his famous Diary due to failing sight.
During the railway boom of the 1800s, it was found that the clocks kept in every village and town in Britain were almost never in agreement as to the time! The railway companies had all their station clocks set to Greenwich Mean Time in the 1840s, but it was not until 1880 that GMT became the 'legal' time across the country.
