So, there will be a General Election in the UK on the fourth of July. I do wonder whether the date has any significance in our Prime Minister’s mind. He will, of course, be aware that it is Independence Day in the US, and I do wonder what, if any, bearing that might have had on his choice. It may, of course, , have something to do with the fact that the House rises for the Summer Recess on 23rd July. Should the Conservatives lose the election, the incoming Government will have more or less a fortnight in which to make an impression. In short, enough time to do absolutely nothing. Mr Sunak may already know of something ghastly that will happen during the summer and wants the other lot to have to deal with it. But that presupposes that he expects to lose.

I don’t know. Call me a pessimist or a cynic, but I don’t rely on the polls. Do I see the Home Counties and the upper-middle-class generally having a panic about potential tax rises and turning out to vote in droves? Yes, I do. But I think at least some of those votes will go to Reform UK. Enough to make a difference? Insufficient data.

Do I see the working class get off their beleagured rear ends to vote in vast numbers for Keir Starmer? No, I don’t. Because Starmer and his party are, as far as many are…
