Either Camus was ignorat, or conveniently forgot, that~Sysphus waslaredy dead when he was condemnend to his task. It was, if memory serves, his punishment for murdering guests (one of Zeus most sacred laws was that of hospitality), imprisonig Thanatos (Death) to prevent his own death but also preventing anyone else from dying and later deceiving Persephone into letting him out of of the Underworld.

All of which renders Camus ideas not a little ironic!

We are all entirely absurd, in the existential sense of the word, but only intellectuals worry about it. We cling to life because it feels good, because we have things we want to do, because people depend on us, or in the hope that things will get better. Take all of those away, and the only reasons for staying alive are compulsion or sheer bloody-mindedness.

There wiil always be bloody-minded folk about (I should know, I'm one of 'em). But those with the sense and honesty to know they've reached the end of their tether shoud be allowed to make a dignified exit at a moment of their own choosing.
