Don't be simple-minded, you do yourself a disservice. I have studied history, literature, culture, people and many other things during a life I suspect to have been a touch longer than yours. I am no longer simple-minded.

Any act may be beneficial or heinous when observed from a purely objective standpoint. But that is simply according to the consequences of the action. History is composed of many acts, happening both simultaneously and and sequentially; some are beneficial, others heinous and many are performed by the same people. Empires, from the Sumerian to the American and back, have destroyed the lives of millions whilst simultaneously preserving and improving the lives of other millions.

Good and evil are not the same as benefiicial or heinous. Good and evil are about the intentions and beliefs of those who act. It is only in fiction that anyone is, in Shakespeare's words "determined to prove a villain". It is only in comic boks that people call themselve 'villains', or band together in groups called 'Masters of Evil' or 'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'. In real life, they call themselves 'The National Socialist Workers' Party', or 'The White Knights of Ku Klux Klan', or 'The Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple', or 'The Honourable East India Company'. Each and every member of such an organisation believes, whatever the objective nature of the actions they perform, that they are doing the right, proper, good and virtuous thing, however unpleasant that action may be.

'Good' is an adjective we apply only to our own actions, or those of people we agree with. 'Evil' is a perjorative we spply to the actions of those we disagree with. To speak of good and evil is to descend into childish nsme-calling, to fail to understand why things happened, and to banish any hope of preventing further heinous actions in the future. To speak of 'evil' is to sanction revenge on and persecution of those with whom we disagree.

I may or may not be out of my mind - my family sometimes say I'm completely mad - but you are gazing into the abyss. Make sure it does not also gaze into you!
