There is no independent confirmation of the events detailed in the Gospels. A couple of clumsy interpolations in Josephus about sums it up. No Roman or Jewish records at all until much later when Talmudic scholars wrote a variety of critical and hostile pieces about Christians.
By the look of what verifiable documents we have there were a number of cults - Messianic Jewish ones, Greek Mystery Cults and Apocalyptic cults -centred around a figure known as Yeshua or Yeshu in Hebrew or Aramaic, and Christos in Greek scrabbling and squabbling around during the latter part of the 1st Century CE. These 'Apocryphal Gospels' vary from the usual 'The End is Nigh' stuff through political propaganda to high-level Gnostic treatises. The four Gospels that form the basis of the canonical New Testament date from no earlier than the mid-2nd Century CE. They actually post-date the works attributed to Saul/Paul.
It is arguable that for all practical purposes no Christian Church existed prior to the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE. There was certainly no uniform creed, no asgreement of the nature of Jesus and his relationship with God, and no agreement on which Chrisitan writings were accepted canon and which weren't. The Council was convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine I, from which we can infer that its purpose was more political than religious. It was about establishing a State cult in the manner of the pre-Christian state religion of Jupiter Best and Greatest (Jupiter Optimus Maximus), Queen Juno (Iuno Regina) and Minerva. Hence the Holy Trinity and the reverence paid to Mary as both Queen of Heaven (Juno) and the Mourning Mother (Mater Dolorosa, a Roman honorific for Isis). Thus retaining the religious structure of pre-Chrisitan Rome in which followed their own religious whims whilst paying observance to the State cult. The Christians took advantage of this privilege to spread their influence across the then known world and enhance their wealth.
Nobody dies of martyrdom! "Cause of death was sharp-force martyrdom" said no forensic pathologist ever). One can die a martyr, though this designation is usually applied some time post mortem. These proto-Christians were lawfully executed as the troublemakers and con-artists they undoubtedly were.
It was never about Faith and Truth -it never is, except for the poor marks who get taken in - it was and is always about money and power.
