Consciousness is the function that decodes sensory impressions and stimulates physical actions in accordance with them and the genetically-programmed requirements of the body.

The self, which is slightly different, is a function of imagination, which is an evolutionary mutation possessed in a highly-developed form by our species. So we're probably looking in the wrong placesfor the wrong things.
