Competition, yes - though not all men are competitive. I don't like being around people much, so I only test myself against myself.
However, competition can lead to problems if it is not governed or complemented by a code. I don't mean the rules of a game, but a code of behaviour, of conduct. It has to be clear that there are things you don't do. For instance, while it's alright to beat someone, to win fairly, humiliating or mocking them afterwards is wrong. Don't be a sore loser. respect other's life choices. Call out bullies. Oxfords, not brogues. That kind of thing. What turns a man into a gentleman.
