But it’s more than that, isn’t it? It’s the creation of an environment where suddenly, everyone is walking on eggshells. It’s easy to be polite, to listen, to keep your hands to yourself and not to make suggestive remarks -the majority of men, you’ll find, can and do behave like that. But too often now, you find yourself weighing every word when talking to a female colleague. Brushing aside her attempts at friendly conversation; sticking to the work-related point; being brusque to the point of rudeness and possibly hurting her feelings or leaving her to wonder what’s wrong with you, or what she’s done to make you dislike her so. It’s not her, it’s the knowledge that somewhere in the office, that person is listening. The one who believes all men are abusers, that all heterosexual sex is ipso facto rape. The Equality Champion, the Womens’ Representative. The one who can find sexual harassment in a simple “Hello!”, if it’s said first by a man to a woman. The person who now, thanks to all that’s going on, can take your job and your reputation away.
