Asian kids do well becuase their families are old-fashioned in terms of discipline and behavioural expectations.

White middle-class kids get places because their parents and the bosses at schools and universities are all in the same class and regard HE as a right rather than a privilege.

Too many Black people are caught in the trap of thinking that if they do well at school, go to University and get a middle-class job, they will no longer be 'authentically' Black.

The Tripartite system should have worked, except that too many parents of kids eho should have gone ot Technical Schools pushed to get them into Grammar School for social reasons. Thus too few Technical Schools managed to establish themselves, and the few that tried ended up being re-classed as Sec Mods. Also, the failure to abolish private schools sabotaged the whole system. Another failure was, and continues to be, a lack of government-based regulation of Universities, leading to a fuckload of damned silly degrees and no consistent standards.
