As you indicate, so much is still down to the 'old boys' network', basically who you know, rather than what you know. Silicon Valley becomes a closed community of like-minded people, and because of that, inventiveness will begin to decline.

But it's also true to say that any real new opportunities will be based in something people need or want. There is already a degree of weariness at being prsented with endless iterations of the same thing, be it operating systems or gaming consoles. Perhaps something that will allow ordinary people to take back a meaningful measure of control over their lives. Something that allows them to communicate and make decisions free of the pressure and oversight of powerful interests, both financial and political. What that would be, I don't know, but people would know it when they saw it!
