As work and study on the territories crossed by the Silk Road continues, I'm sure more will be discovered about this and other Central Asian civilisations.

Given that among Alexanders' troops, the waters of the Oxus had a bad reputation for causing dysentery -to the point that the recommended proportion of water to wine in the valley was 1-5 to be safe - is it possible that the cities were abandoned because the water became toxic?
