Always a swings and roundabouts thing - a poor to medicore film that nevertheless puts bums on seats will often provide the money for a better but less popular piece of work.
As to critics, there are those who love the form they work on, those with an agenda - political or social - and those with a mortgage to pay. The latter two are quite generally not worth reading.
I enjoy your work, for instance, because you clearly love film. On the other hand, I don't always agree with your view - as far as I am concerned, It's a Wonderful Life is a saccharine mess, for instance. But that's just taste, I suppose, and I'm no critic!
