A human voice, no different from any other. Except for some, who because the speaker is Black, refuse to hear the humanity. This refusal may come from a place of anger and bitterness; from a place of ingorance and stupidity; but mostly from a place of fear. Fear not so much of the Black man, or even of difference. but of change. The fear that freedom, humanity, equality, equity or whatever, is a zero-sum game. That whatever you gain, they must lose. That if given equality, the Black man will seize superiority. The fear that Nature is hierarchical, and will permit only one kind of person to be free and dominant.
I have spent my adut life battling for the underdog. Unfairness and dishonesty have always angered me. I never cared what colour, gender or sexuality these underdogs had. All I cared about was that they be treated fairly and honestly I am not one for movements or campaigns - too many cooks, as the saying goes. I'll just go on as I always have, one life at a time. Now you know who I am.
