3D was, is and always will be a gimmick. Technologically, it has been superseded by VR, which has found its home where it belongs, in gaming.
I have been to a couple of 3D/4D attractions at DisneyWorld and found them entertaining. But these were pieces designed for the format. Short and played for laughs, generally. The 3D Spider-Man ride at Universal Studios was also a laudable effort.
But in the cinema proper, it is merely a distraction and an annoyance. But mildly better than applying electric shocks to certain audience members as they did in early performances of The Tingler!
